Think green!

At the international level, our dialogue with several sustaining groups assure important information for the health, security and environment policies, Heineken being represented by working groups that take care of the implementation of the European Directive 96/61/E. Its purpose is to reduce to minimum the impact on the environment, using the best prevention techniques.

Heineken Romania initiated the “Think green!” program, as part of the “Think responsibly!” platform, including all the projects regarding the protection of the environment: both the internal, and the external ones, done together with the partners of the company.

Some of the projects done by Heineken Romania within the “Think green!” program are:

  • Recycle, Raft & Race
  • The Paper Tree (Copacul de Hartie)

Recycle, Raft & Race

The environmental and educational program Recycle, Raft & Race developed by Heineken Romania in partnership with MaiMultVerde Association had the objective to form 100 young leaders to mobilize environment volunteers in their communities and to organize their own ecological, planting, informing and educational actions, through the www.maimultverde.ro platform. For a whole month, each series of 25 youngsters attended trainings for leadership, orientation and surviving in the nature, first aid, communication and organizational development.

The participants at the Recycle, Raft & Race project were selected from a total number of over 200 applications, the criterias used being the motivation of participating to this program, their potential for leadership, their previous experience in volunteering activities and the geographical distribution, so that the 100 leaders represent all the regions of Romania. Volunteers from Heineken Romania joined the volunteers from MaiMultVerde in the cleaning activities.

At the end of each series, the volunteers were visited by the VIPs: Iulia Vantur (Pro Tv), Razvan Fodor (Acasa TV), Amalia Enache (Pro TV), Cabral Ibacka (Acasa TV), Malvina Cservenschi (TVR 1), Virgil Iantu (Prima TV), Andreea Raducan and Dragos Bucurenci, their leaders in the competition at the end of the project.

The cleaning component of the camp was about collecting the wastes from different areas from Prahova Valley, the total quantity of wastes collected during the camp being of 30 tones.

From the collected PETs, rafts were built and used by the volunteers and by the VIPs in the race held on Baneasa Lake in Bucharest on the 7th of June 2009, the event marking the ending of the project. The other wastes, separated after having been collected, were given to the recycling companies.

On the four rafts built from the PETs raced the following teams:

  • Iulia Vantur (PRO TV), Razvan Fodor (Acasa TV) and the volunteers from the first RRR series

  • Amalia Enache (PRO TV), Cabral Ibacka (Acasa TV) and the volunteers from the second RRR series

  • Malvina Cservenschi (TVR 1), Nicolae Nemirschi (The Minister of Environment) and the volunteers from the third RRR series

  • Virgil Iantu (Prima TV), Andreea Raducan and the volunteers from the fourth RRR series

The first place was equally won by the teams lead by Iulia Vantur and Razvan Fodor, respectively by Amalia Enache and Cabral Ibacka. The second place was occupied by Malvina Cervenschi and Nicolae Nemirschi, The Minister of Environment and the third place was occupied by the team lead by Virgil Iantu and Andreea Raducan.

The leaders of volunteers will organize by the end of the year at least one environmental action with the volunteers, applying the knowledge and experience gathered during the camp. They will benefit from assistance from MaiMultVerde, in order to successfully end their cleaning, planting, informing and educational actions they will carry on. „This way, Heineken Romania together with MaiMultVerde Association managed to start not only one project for collecting the wastes, but to start 100 projects for the environment.“, Ana-Maria Muresan, Corporate Relations Manager Heineken Romania.

Paper Tree (Copacul de hartie)

The Paper Tree program was launched in 2007 by mediaORG nonprofit organization. By this program, the paper used by some of the companies in Bucharest is collected and transported to the recycling points. The money received is invested in buying trees that are planted by the volunteers in polluted or cleared areas.

During 2008, Heineken Romania was the development partner of the “Paper Tree” project, aiming to expand the project team and the facilities in Bucharest, to expand the project to other cities and to organize planting actions in the mountains.

Heineken Romania supported the program by financing it, by getting involved in the projects done by the “Paper Tree” team and in the development of some internal projects for educating the employees of the company regarding the protection of the environment. Furthermore, the employees from Heineken Romania got involved as volunteers in this program, planting trees and helping the environment become greener.

Heineken Romania is still part of the Paper Tree program: periodically, the team collects the used paper from the Headquarters in Bucharest.

Internal programs:

Internal educational campaigns for protecting the environment were done for the employees of Heineken Romania. We got our employees involved in all the social responsibility programs dedicated to the protection of the environment, we taught them what does a responsible behavior towards the environment mean and we installed points for collecting the used paper in the Headquarters.
