Heineken Romania became the main partner of the Paper Tree project

Bucharest, 20 May 2008

Heineken is the main development partner of the Paper Tree program, initiated by the media-ORG non profit organization. The agreement was signed in March 2008 and enables Heineken Romania to support the Paper Tree initiative for a two year period. The partnership will mainly focus on developing the Bucharest team and facilities, extending the project to other cities, and organizing tree planting camps in the mountain regions.

Edwin Botterman, President & CEO of Heineken Romania, stated: „We have decided to become the main partner of Paper Tree project, as part of our larger CSR platform entitled „Proud to be green”. One of our company’s core values is Respect for the Environment, therefore we are committed to making Bucharest and other parts of Romania a little bit “greener” for everyone to enjoy”.

What does the Paper Tree need in order to grow?
Launched in 2007, The Paper Tree program aims to collect paper from companies in Bucharest and transport it to the recycling centres. With the money received for this paper, investments are made in the acquisition of baby trees which are then planted by volunteers, in polluted or land-cleared regions.
From a very simple idea, the project gained more and more ground and the collection process became more and more complicated, logistically speaking. Without a stable financial support, the project would not have been able to further develop properly.

Claudia Catana, Paper Tree Project Coordinator and Vice-President of the media-ORG organization, declared: “When we first launched the Paper Tree program, we thought it would be very hard to convince people to recycle. However, the project grew impressively in a short period of time and it now needs the proper support to develop accordingly with people’s interest. Today, a year after the launch, this is possible with Heineken Romania’s help. We are convinced that through this partnership, our program will become an important platform that informs, creates awareness and actively supports the protection of the environment.”

Heineken Romania’s contribution:
As part of the commitment to support this “green” project, Heineken Romania will contribute to its development in 3 main ways:
• First of all, Heineken will help strengthen the Paper Tree Bucharest team by offering support in the purchase of communication facilities, means of transport and other logistical equipment.
• The second phase of development refers to extending the Paper Tree initiative to other cities, where people and companies have shown a strong interest in collecting and giving away paper to be recycled. The fist two cities where the initiative will be extended are Craiova and Constanta. Heineken Romania will stand by the Paper Tree project and will help it grow further.
• As a third layer of Heineken’s partnership with media-ORG, two planting camps will be organized per year, in specially selected locations in the mountain areas. Heineken’s employees will take part in this initiative and make their surroundings greener and more pleasant to live in.

5 simple rules for recycling paper:
• Paper is recycled separately from cardboard
• The paper must not be broken, altered, pressed or folded.
• Cardboard boxes must be opened but not flattened
• The following items can be recycled: paper consumables (printed paper, notebooks, envelopes, etc), papers, magazines, promotional offers, catalogues.
• Items that are not recyclable: napkins, toilet paper or paper/cardboard that was used for storing food (such as pizza boxes or soda glasses).

About the Paper Tree initiative:

So far, 183.771 kg of paper and 24.692 kg of carton have been colected. 1120 baby tress have been planted in November 2007. For more information, please visit www.copaculdehartie.ro
