Heineken Romania Brings the Paper Tree to Cluj Napoca şi ConstanţaBucharest, 05 August 2008
The partnership between Heineken Romania and The Paper Tree, initiated in February 2008, is now expanding out of Bucharest. Following new requests from across the country, we identified several cities where this project has made new friends. Starting in July, our paper recycling initiative also goes to Cluj Napoca and Constanta.
Claudia Catană, Coordinator of the "Paper Tree" Project and Vice President of the mediaORG organization, stated: "The people of Cluj and Constanta have proven they are really eager to recycle, as they have sent us numerous messages, asking us to come to their cities as well. Thanks to our partnership with Heineken Romania, we are now able to reach outside of Bucharest, and “green-up” other areas of the country as well”.

The MediaORG non-governmental organization and Heineken Romania have opened local offices in these two cities, where activities will be supervised by a local coordinator. Launched in 2007, the Paper Tree Program aims to collect used paper from companies in Bucharest (and now also from Cluj-Napoca and Constanta), and transport it to recycling centers, with the resulting funds being invested in buying baby trees that are further planted by volunteers in areas affected by pollution or deforestations.
About the Paper Tree initiative:
Paper Tree is an initiative of the non-profit organization Media-ORG launched in 2007. The project is based on a very simple principle: collecting the paper, selling the paper, buying the baby trees, planting the baby trees with the help of volunteers (persons or companies) and rebuilding the environment. So far, 183.771 kg of paper and 24.692 kg of carton have been colected. 1120 baby tress have been planted in November 2007.

About the Paper Tree – Heineken Romania Partnership
Heineken Romania is the leading brewer on the Romanian market. In 2008, the company announced its decision of becoming the main development partner of the Paper Tree project. This partnership includes supporting the development of the team and of the Bucharest facilities, expanding the project to other cities and organizing tree planting campaigns in mountain areas.
Heineken Romania and the Paper Tree have so far organized together two tree planting campaigns. The official launching of their partnership was celebrated with a special tree planting session held in Bucharest, entitled "The Greenest Day", and a special NGO fair, where non-profit environmental organizations presented their goals and plans in front of the public.
In June, the Tree Paper and Heineken Romania responded to an invitation launched by the Management of the "Retezat" National Park, and planted juniper trees on the upper segment of the Dragasnu Torrent. Five tons of juniper saplings were carried by helicopter into the Retezat Mountain, in order for the steep slopes in this area to be replanted and consolidated, as they had been affected by excessive sheep grazing. In order to recover this area, environmental terraces were built to support the freshly planted saplings that will further consolidate the ground.
